Winter can be a challenging time for many members of the elderly community in Somerset, and they are often faced with the difficult choice of whether to pay for heating or food. Surviving Winter is a lifeline for those grappling with the high energy costs and this year, with no additional government assistance, the grants provided by Surviving Winter supported by the Somerset Community Foundation are more important than ever.
Somerset Community Foundation plays a crucial role in supporting people in need within the Somerset area. The foundation is dedicated to providing financial aid to hundreds of local charities, community groups, and social enterprises, with the aim to create a more resilient community. One of the campaigns, supported by the Somerset Community Foundation is Surviving Winter, which focuses on assisting 10,000 Somerset pensioners who are struggling with fuel poverty. This number is almost twice the amount from the previous count, emphasising the urgency of the situation.
Surviving Winter grants play a pivotal role in alleviating many pensioners' financial anxiety and as some contemplate not turning on their heating or cutting back on essentials, these grants cover heating costs and offer essential support. They also provide community meals, befriending support, and activities to reduce loneliness and isolation.
